MEET GWYNETH SAUNDERS
Representation You Can Trust - Courage to Deliver
Gwyneth J. Saunders is a retired U.S. Navy Veteran, a journalist, and a truth-teller. Called to service once again, Saunders has filed to run for State Senate, District 46, because she believes the women of South Carolina deserve an honest voice in Columbia.
Originally reporting to Recruit Training Command (Women), Bainbridge, Md. in January 1972, Saunders enlisted at a time when women made up less than 2% of the Navy’s total force. She takes pride in an illustrious and trail-blazing military career spanning over two decades. Concurrent with her Navy service, she earned her bachelor’s degree with honors in journalism from Norfolk State University in 1981. Her military career took her to locales all over the world, with posts in Cuba, Japan, and Antarctica. Prior to retirement, Saunders served in the Navy’s Chief of Information Office in the Pentagon as Bureau Chief of the Navy Wire Service, a news service disseminated throughout the Navy around the world.
When she’s not breaking glass ceilings, Gwyneth enjoys performing in the community chorus, theatre, and dance clubs, and spending time with her husband Tony and their two cats. Since retiring from the Navy, Saunders has worked for a Washington Post newspaper chain and several media outlets in Beaufort County, S.C., and was the first woman commander of the Sun City Veterans Association.
Through her military training and background in journalism, she has honed the very skills we need in our leaders today: integrity, public service, and a fierce commitment to the truth. Gwyneth J. Saunders is running to be your next Senator for South Carolina District 46.
